Hound's tongue

FEATURE 6:CYNOGLOSSUM GERMANICUM (GREEN HOUNDSTONGUE):

Attributes
· size of population
· distribution of population

Objective 6: To maintain population in a favourable condition.

Rationale

Before 1987 the presence of green houndstongue on Norbury Park was known via English Nature's SSSI notification. In 1987 a survey was initiated to accurately assess the population size and distribution. A further survey was carried out in 1997 and it was found that the size of the population had increased dramatically but the distribution was largely the same. This dramatic increase in population has evolved through natural processes especially the great storm of 1987 and also transferral of seed by large mammals. No specific man management has taken place except in certain areas where woodland thinning operations have been carried out.
