In 1923 the
Association of American Geographers was called upon to make
geography:
'...the science of human ecology... Geography
will aim to make clear the relationships existing between natural
environments and the distribution and activities of man... from the
standpoint of man's adjustment to environment rather than
environmental influence'.
The organising
concept for geography was to be the region, in which the
geographer synthesised elements of the physical environment with
human activity to produce the image of an individualistic and
well-defined spatial entity with a unique character, a particular
living ecosystem.
