One of the key issues impacting on the
coordination and management of ecological research and management in the MMNR is the several
institutions with responsibilities for different
aspects of the area’s management. In the past,
ambiguities in the relationships between these organisations have
inhibited the flow of information between researchers and
managers of the area, which has both
undermined the impact of research findings on management, and
created problems for scientists conducting research
in the area. In response, the first action under this
objective focuses on formalising the existing relationship
between KWS and MMNR management with regard ecological
research and monitoring in the Reserve.
This agreement will specify the roles and
responsibilities of each of the parties, and in particular set out
respective responsibilities for the implementation and
coordination of ecological monitoring and research activities
in the MMNR. In order to further enhance the formal
practical working relationship between KWS
and MMNR management, an ecologist will be jointly
recruited by CCN and CCTM (see Protected Area
Operations Programme, Action 3.2) to oversee research and
monitoring activities, provide a direct link
between management and research and monitoring activities
in the area, and help ensure that all activities are
reported to area management in a concise and appropriate
format.
