Objective 2 - To make suitable provision for
scientific research and survey in so far as this iscompatible with
Objective 1.
Within the agreed policy there is encouragement
for scientific research which may benefit knowledge of species and
assist conservation understanding. This policy has been followed
throughout and applications for pure research have been
rejected.
Research accommodation is supplied by the CCW but
supervised by the DWT staff.
To date research has been principally by post
graduate students carrying out doctorate studies but there have
been specific studies of the shearwater disease "puffinosis" and
during each summer since 1978 a Field Assistant has been employed
by the EGI to study the survival rates of some seabird
species.
The objective is to maintain the research
input to try and continue to understand the changing factors which
affect the reserve and thereby help with the management process.Specific encouragement
will be given to the study of aspects which have a potentially high
input to the conservation of the notable species on the reserve. In
general there is no conflict between species protection and
research but this factor is a recognised constraint within the
authorisation procedure.
