The most important factors influencing ecosystems on a global scale are climatic humidity and temperature.  The above diagram defines 21 global biomes in terms of the mean annual temperature and the mean rainfall.  These relationships are not absolute and the broken lines indicate variability in defining boundaries due to particular regional factors, such as soil types, maritime influences and altitude.  These factors set local ecological base-lines but cannot be manipulated by managers.
