Introduced substances may be rapidly turned
over between water and organisms
and effectively removed from the water into organisms. The rapidity of these
processes and their effect on water content emphasizes the responsiveness of
organisms and communities to the chemistry of environment, and the significance
of their effects on the chemistry of environment. Uptake and accumulation by
organisms (and settling of dead organisms) are responsible also for the slower,
longer-term removal of the introduced substance from the water with its plankton,
into other parts of the ecosystem.
