The European Community LIFE (Financial Instrument
for the Environment) scheme provides funds to support
the development and implementation of Community environmental
policy. LIFE-Environment demonstration projects are
designed to promote sustainable development in industrial
activities.
Biodiversity Action on Industrial Sites
BAIS) is a LIFE-Environment project designed to
demonstrate how industrial sites can contribute to wildlife
conservation (European Community 1998).
The project used a computer-mediated industrial
Conservation Management System (iCMS)
to generate biodiversity management plans, record actions
and monitor their effectiveness. This summary report
describes the project and demonstrates that biodiversity
management benefits wildlife and industry.
There is a web-based resource for education
and training and a downloadable Acrobat version of the
final report to the EC.
