4.5.12 Herring gull
Monitor the population
Species management option b1 non intervention
  • By annual survey each year establish colony locations and population.
  • Monitor the breeding success each year where possible (by the EGI under JNCC contract).
  • Monitor adult survival by colour ringing and observation (by the EGI under JNCC contract).
  • Regularly re-assess management requirements in response to population changes- bi- annually at least.
Note- there was much discussion about controlling this species in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the population was increasing rapidly.  Today the population is much lower and the emphasis is on monitoring.
