4.5.1 Seabird communities
Maintain and where possible enhance protection for the seabird colonies
1 Habitat management option A2 limited intervention
  • Monitor colonies and instances of disturbance by human or other species.
  • Where possible protect from disturbance by humans by :-
    • wardening
    • education/literature
    • if required move footpaths or viewing areas
  • Protect from other species by control of predators if appropriate
  • Monitor cliff colonies by counts and annual photography.
2 Study and research option C2 specialist facility
  • Promote studies of the effects of disturbance at seabird colonies.
  • Promote studies on the interaction between LBB gull colonies and Manx Shearwater and Puffin colonies.
3 Education and interpretation option D3 active publicity
  • Promote understanding of colony species structure and vulnerability by displays and literature (see also section later on 'visitor facilities- information and publications')
  • Encourage appreciation of the importance of the seabird colonies esp to school groups by providing detailed information packs to teachers or leaders.
4 General access and recreation option E3 partially open access
  • Encourage the general public to follow the footpaths and view colonies from them.
  • Inform all visitors, helpers and research workers of the vulnerability of the Manx Shearwater colonies.
