4.5.2 Fulmar
Monitor the population and its impact on other species
1 Species management option b1 non intervention
  • Allow natural processes to develop
  • Monitor the breeding population by counting apparently occupied nest sites each year in early June
  • Monitor where possible the occupation of new sites where there may be interaction with other species e.g. on the Wick Annual photographs of some ledges would be an appropriate method. March counts are also proposed.
2 Study and research option c2 specialist facility
  • Promote studies to determine productivity and recruitment.
  • Cooperate with studies to calculate adult survival rates.
3 Education and interpretation option d3 active publicity
  • By the use of displays, reserve guides and species fact sheets describe the expansion of the Fulmars range, population on Skomer and general biology.
Note- this species now occupies ledges formerly used by Guillemots (from 1946 photo of the Wick) and may now be preventing their recolonisation.
