4.5.3 Manx shearwater
Maintain and if possible enhance the population
1 Species management option b3 encouragement and increase
  • Promote a greater understanding of their distribution on Skomer by:-
    • burrow distribution surveys
    • night time transect counts.
  • Protect burrows/colonies from trampling.
  • Manage vegetation if it can be shown that any vegetation type either favours, or is detrimental to, the birds.
  • Repeat census by trap/retrap methods used in 1978 and 1989 - every 10 years.
2 Study and research option c2 specialist facility
  • Promote studies to indicate if vegetation types and/or rabbits influence burrow density occupation and breeding success.
  • Promote studies to show the effects, if any, of LBB gull colonies on the Manx Shearwaters on breeding success, distribution and density
  • Continue to support any studies which seek to identify the cause of Puffinosis in the birds.
  • Promote studies to ascertain the extent and effects of any interactions between Manx Shearwaters and Puffins.
  • Consider  any  other research project which might provide a greater understanding of the species or which might aid management for the species.
3 Education and interpretation option d3 By the use of tape recordings describe the night sounds of the birds
  • Wardens to explain to day visitors and particularly overnight guests, the importance of the island and generally encourage greater understanding of the species.
  • Promote a wider under -standing of the species and Skomer's importance through the broadcasting and printed media.active publicity
  • By displays, reserve guide and species fact sheets describe aspects of the species biology population and migration
4 General access and recreation option b2 restricted access
  • Restrict overnight guests and other residents to footpaths and encourage photography only in the farm to North Haven area.
