The
key theme in the conservation governance debate is to enhance, at
neighbourhood, national, regional and global levels, the
integration of the sustainable development principle, of which
environmental management is one of three pillars, the other
two being social and economic development.
This means mainstreaming environmental concerns
into every existing issue at all levels and organisations in
the socio-political and economic spheres and viewing this
within the context of sustainable development as well as the
current international governance structures for environment,
trade and finance. The goal is to focus on habitats and
species while keeping the context of sustainable development
as the overarching framework and objective.
